The 1992 Consensus is the political foundation of the development of cross-Straits relations and underpins peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits, Song Tao, head of both the Taiwan Work Office of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said on Friday.

He made the remarks during a symposium held in Beijing to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Wang-Koo Talks, a historic meeting that marked a major step forward for cross-Straits relations.

In April 1993, Wang Daohan, then head of the Chinese mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS), and Koo Chen-fu, then chairman of the Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation, held a productive meeting in Singapore, establishing institutionalized mechanisms for contact and consultation between the two sides.

Song reiterated that peaceful development is in line with the common interests of compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Straits, and called for firm adherence to the road of peaceful development of cross-Straits relations.

Deviation from the one-China principle will make cross-Straits relations strained and volatile, and the interests of the compatriots in Taiwan will be damaged, Song said.

The Chinese people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits are fully capable to solve their own problems, and affairs at home will be well resolved as long as they are addressed through consultation, he added.

Zhang Zhijun, president of the ARATS, said the Wang-Koo Talks opened a precedent for institutionalized talks between the two organizations, set an example of equal consultation on the basis of the one-China principle, and gave a strong impetus to cross-Straits exchanges with far-reaching effects.
