The top two teams of each group will advance to the next round while the rest will compete to decide the rankings between No. 17 and No. 32. The teams' rankings in the World Cup will decide whether they can secure automatic qualification for the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024, or will need to compete in the Olympic qualification tournament.

The three opponents China will play in Group B are all formidable foes. Serbia are led by two-time NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets and bench leader Bogdan Bogdanovic of the Atlanta Hawks. Puerto Rico have found their fast and wild style of playing back after Jose Alvarado of the New Orleans Pelicans joined the team. South Sudan have risen quickly under the leadership of former NBA star player Luol Deng and may get two NBA players, Wenyen Gabriel of the Los Angeles Lakers and Bol Bol of the Orlando Magic, to join the team.

China will need to outperform Japan, Jordan, Lebanon, Iran and the Philippines in the World Cup to secure automatic qualification for Paris 2024.

Group E became the absolute "group of death" as Germany, Finland and Australia are evenly balanced in power. The competition between USA, which can select from hundreds of NBA players to assemble their lineup, and Greece, which are led by two-time NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks, will be one of the most eye-catching games during the group stage.
