China's Zheng Qinwen reached the last 32 at the WTA Madrid Open over American Caty McNally 6-4, 7-6(3) in a span of two hours and 15 minutes on Friday.
Earlier on Friday, the biggest shock of the day came when Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan lost a three-set marathon, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, to Anna Kalinskaya from Russia, who took her first top 10 win on a clay court.
Meanwhile, Daria Kasatkina beat Anastasia Pavlyucenkova in an all-Russian set-up, and Czech Barbora Krejcikova also reached the next round over Danka Kovinic from Montenegro.
On the men's side, third seed Casper Ruud of Norway suffered a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Italy's Matteo Arnaldi.
Fifth seed Andrey Rublev of Russia had a hard-won 7-5, 6-4 victory over Swiss Stan Wawrinka, and was later joined by Italian Lorenzo Musetti and Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov into the third round.
