With the 13th Beijing International Film Festival still underway, young director Shao Yihui has been making a hit with her movie "B for Busy." Shao won the opportunity by presenting her script in the pitch project. CGTN reporter Wang Siwen sat down with her.
Question: The script you wrote won two awards at the FIRST International Film Festival. The festival also set up project pitches for young directors. What opportunities in the film industry are there for young people?
Shao Yihui: Now those "project pitches" program are really good and necessary, that's where I found the opportunity and succeeded. If there are not those project pitches programs, no FIRST Film Festival, I would not have the chance to make movies. I even feel that's the only way to let young, not such experienced, directors or scriptwriters to be seen. Now there are more and more platforms like this, like Beijing, Shanghai, and FIRST International Film Festivals.
Question: Your profile picture on Weibo is of the judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg. You have been focusing on the role and power of women. How does this focus play out in your movies and creations?
Shao Yihui: Firstly, a work must reflect the author behind it, even though the creator does not actively express it. The work must have its opinions, attitudes, recognitions, aesthetics and taste. The movie will show it completely.
On the other hand, I live in the society. I must notice things. Everyone's destiny is closely related to us. Every policy, every change and the environment are related to us as well, as long as we are alive. We don't live in a vacuum, so we have to notice, then you must have your attitude, perspective. When you write stories, even a love story, your expression will be in it.
Question: You also pay close attention to the news and often speak out on social media. Why is it important to have a voice, to express yourself in this way?
Shao Yihui: I think speaking up is really necessary, otherwise, who will you depend on to make a voice. For those who are really in difficulties, no one will see the person's post, he has to ask for help, for those having bigger fan, to make an influence. I feel it's a must, for influential people to take this social responsibility.
Question: What advice do you have for young people who have dreams to work in film?
Shao Yihui: Before making "B for Busy" my annual income is around 20 thousand yuan. I have said this before, I wrote for social media accounts, I wrote novels, selling electronic cigarettes to make money, for quite a long time, because you don't really find any opportunity, especially for a young director.
In a secular way, I don't have a lot of desires, I don't wanna get married, have children, buy a house or car, which means I don't have the large part of the need of making money, buying a house or whether I should make money, I never wavered about that, and it's even not in my choice.
So for everyone's value ranking, if you have less pressure, on money or desire, it's still ok to make a living right? Then you write and read at home, it doesn't cost a lot of money for watching movies, it costs less than other things already. Sometimes younger people ask me how to make money, while find a stable job, while also do creations, for me, I can not do the balance. If I tell this to other people, How much do you like it, what will you give up for the things you love?
So my opinion for a young director or directors, you better have the ability to chance to direct by yourself. Also, writing the scripts is low cost and you can be trained, as long as you write a lot and watch a lot, practice a lot.
