A gas leak from a factory killed at least 11 people and left several others hospitalized in the Giaspura locality of Ludhiana in the north Indian state of Punjab, local media reported Sunday citing a local official. 

Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner Surabhi Malik told reporters that there's a possible gas contamination and the National Disaster Response Force is retrieving samples.

"It is quite likely that maybe some chemical reacted with methane in manholes ... All of this is being verified," she said. 

Early media reports said 11 others were injured and have been sent to a hospital.
