At least six people were killed in a series of chain-reaction crashes that occurred during a dust storm south of Springfield, Illinois, on Interstate 55 on Monday. According to police, roughly 40 to 60 passenger cars and 30 commercial vehicles, including numerous tractor-trailer trucks, were involved in the pileup. At least two commercial vehicles caught fire and more than 30 people were taken to local hospitals, with ages of those injured ranging from two to 80 years old. The highway remains closed and will likely be shut down until May 2.
