Arsenal returned to the top of the Premier League after a 3-1 victory over Chelsea on Tuesday, having played two more games than reigning champions Manchester City, who had taken the top spot this past weekend.

City are now two points short of Arsenal, and will reclaim top spot if they win a home game against West Ham United on Wednesday.

Arsenal raced to a 3-0 halftime lead after captain Martin Odegaard scored in the 18th and 31st minutes, and Gabriel Jesus converted from close-range 11 minutes before the break.

Noni Madueke netted the only goal for Chelsea in the 65th minute, who lost their sixth straight game in all competitions since interim coach Frank Lampard replaced Graham Potter last month.

On Mikel Arteta's part, he replaced Gabriel Martinelli with Leandro Trossard in the starting lineup, and gave Jakub Kiwior his first league start in midfield, as his side sought to shake off last week's potentially title-deciding setback, a 4-1 defeat to City.
