Death toll from heavy rains and landslides in the Northern and Western Provinces of Rwanda has risen to 129, the state-run Rwanda Broadcasting Agency (RBA) said Wednesday, quoting figures from the government.

"The death toll from last night's heavy rains and floods rises to 129," RBA tweeted, warning the death toll is still increasing.

Authorities in the country said they're continuing the search for survivors trapped in their homes. "Our main priority now is to reach every house that has been damaged to ensure we can rescue any person who may be trapped," François Habitegeko, governor of Rwanda's Western Province, told Reuters.

Habitegeko also revealed that some people had been rescued and taken to the hospital, but did not say how many.

In neighboring Uganda near the border with Rwanda, six people, including a family of five, died overnight into Wednesday in an area in the southwestern Kisoro district, after heavy rains pounded the mountainous region, according to the Uganda Red Cross.
