Chinese tourism saw a remarkable surge during the five-day Labor Day holiday that ended on Wednesday.

Domestic tourism revenue achieved a significant recovery, rebounding to a little more than 2019 levels, data from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism showed. The number of domestic trips taken reached 274 million, a 71 percent surge from last year.

The China Tourism Academy projected over 90 million inbound and outbound trips for China this year.

The domestic travel rush was evident across various locations. Zibo, the hottest tourist destination of the season, was obligated to direct travelers to visit neighboring cities in Shandong province instead, because it was out of capacity to host all of them. Tickets to many domestic tourist attractions were sold out due to the influx of demand.

Catering consumption and box office statistics also stood out. Catering consumption during the first three days of the holiday increased by 92 percent compared with the same period in 2019, data from consumer platform Meituan showed.

Moreover, China's box office amassed around 1.52 billion yuan ($220 million) over the five-day period, recording the third highest May Day holiday box office in Chinese film history, data from the National Film Administration showed.

As the Labor Day break marks the first long holiday since China resumed outbound group tours in February, it seems many were eager for the opportunity to travel overseas again. The number of outbound flight ticket orders jumped almost nine-fold on the online travel agency Trip.com.

More than six million trips across the Chinese border were made during the holiday, reaching almost 60 percent of the 2019 level, data from the National Immigration Administration showed.

The boom in Chinese tourism during the Labor Day holiday has injected new vitality into the country's economy. The holiday has allowed people to discover new experiences once again.
