At least 17 people were killed and another 29 were injured when a passenger bus hit a truck late Wednesday in New Valley Province in southwestern Egypt, the country's Ministry of Health and Population said Thursday.

Carrying 45 people, the bus heading to Cairo slammed into the truck, which was moving slowly to park on Al-Kharga-Assiut road in the al-Nabq region, said New Valley Province authorities in a statement early Thursday morning.

The statement added that seventeen ambulances rushed to the scene to dispatch the wounded to nearby government hospitals.

Following the accident, the governor of New Valley Province, Mohamed el-Zamlout, announced that the movement of heavy trucks on Al-Kharga-Assiut road would be halted from 20:00 (1800 GMT) to 07:00 (0500 GMT) starting from Thursday to prevent similar accidents. He also announced a more intensified road campaign to test truck drivers for drugs.

In Egypt, traffic accidents claim thousands of lives every year. Most of the accidents are caused by speeding, poor maintenance of roads and lax enforcement of traffic laws.
