South China Sea should not be 'hunting ground' for external forces: MOFA

China firmly opposes any country using the bilateral treaty as an excuse to meddle in the South China Sea, and undermine China's territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Thursday.

During a meeting with Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. on Monday, U.S. President Joe Biden reaffirmed support for the bilateral defense treaty, saying that the U.S. commitment to the defense of its ally was "ironclad," including in the South China Sea.

With the joint efforts of regional countries, the current situation in the South China Sea has remained generally stable, and freedom of navigation and overflight in the South China Sea has never been a problem, Mao said.

The spokesperson said the South China Sea is the common home of regional countries and should not become a "hunting ground" for forces outside the region.

The key to peace and stability in the South China Sea lies in regional countries' adherence to mutual trust, unity and cooperation, and taking the initiative to settle differences in their own hands, she added.
