The U.S. is behind the attack on the Kremlin and Ukraine carried it out, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday, a day after Russia said that two drones aiming to kill President Vladimir Putin were shot down near the Kremlin. Russia initially blamed Ukraine for the attack – a charge which Kyiv has swiftly denied.

"Attempts to disown this, both in Kyiv and in Washington, are, of course, absolutely ridiculous. We know very well that decisions about such actions, about such terrorist attacks, are made not in Kyiv but in Washington," Peskov said on Thursday.

He said Putin was working in his office in the Kremlin as usual on Thursday but added that security measures in Moscow would be beefed up following the attack.

Since Wednesday, several Russian regions as well as major cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg have announced a ban on unauthorized use of unnamed aerial vehicles.

On Thursday, Russia also reported a series of drone attacks on oil facilities and train derailments, blaming Ukraine for the same.
