When the May Day holiday ended and people went back to their workplace, Chinese fishermen along the coastal line are still enjoying their long "holiday."

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China announced the annual summer fishing ban in China has begun since May 1.

It covers the Bohai Sea, the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea and the waters north of 12 degrees north latitude in the South China Sea (including the Beibu Gulf in south China).

On the same day, the ministry also launched a law-enforcement operation in conjunction with China Coast Guard and the Ministry of Public Security in waters off the coast of Shandong and Fujian provinces, and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, aiming to maintain the order of the finishing ban and to protect the marine fishery resources.

This year's fishing ban will last for three to four months depending on certain areas and fishing nets used.

In 1980s, extensive overfishing put great pressure on marine fishery resources and marine environment. To promote a sustainable development and to conserve the marine resources, the former ministry of agriculture decided to implement a seasonal marine fishing moratorium system from 1995.

As of today, the system has become the strictest fishing ban which involves the largest population, lasts the longest in history and has the biggest influence in China.
