Liu Kuo has worked as a deliveryman in Beijing for six years.

Every morning, while most people are still asleep, Liu and his colleagues are already at the express delivery station, sorting thousands of packages based on their addresses.

Liu is among the millions of delivery men and women in China who play an important role in the booming express delivery industry.

In the first quarter of this year, China's courier companies handled nearly 27 billion parcels, marking an increase of 11 percent from the previous year.

Liu still remembers the day when he met Chinese President Xi Jinping. On February 1, 2019, before the Lunar New Year, President Xi visited residents in downtown Beijing.

During his tour of a hutong (a small lane), Xi dropped into the express delivery station where Liu worked and visited the deliverymen on duty. Xi showed appreciation for their diligence and contribution to making people's lives more convenient.

"I was so surprised that my mind went blank. No one told us in advance that President Xi would come. I didn't know what to say to him. He shook hands with us and asked us some questions, such as whether we would go home for the Lunar New Year, how long we'd been working here, and whether we had social insurance," Liu said.

Liu works in Beijing, while his wife and child still live in their hometown in central China's Henan Province. He hopes his child can attend school in Beijing, and the family of three can live together in the capital city. To achieve this goal, Liu will work hard.
