In 1898, an overseas Chinese from Hainan named Kuang Shilian brought back coffee seeds from Malaysia and planted them in his hometown – Wenchang County. Eventually, 12 plants survived, starting the history of coffee cultivation in Wenchang that has now lasted for over 120 years. Wenchang coffee is mostly of the large-seeded Liberian variety, with a few medium-seeded Robusta beans and small-seeded Arabica coffees. It is mainly grown in Wenchang's areas like Maihao, Shibi, Penglai, and Nanyang.
