Two days after Paris Saint-Germain suspended Lionel Messi for two weeks following the football superstar's unauthorized trip outside France, the Argentina captain finally broke his silence, noting he will wait for the club to decide what they want to do with him.

Messi, who will not extend his contract with PSG when his current deal ends this summer, missed Monday's training session to attend promotional events in Saudi Arabia following his team's 3-1 loss to Lorient at the Parc de Princes over the weekend.

According to multiple French media outlets, Messi did not get the permission to travel despite having asked PSG for it. The club's hierarchy was not impressed and the World Cup winner was therefore banned from playing or training with the team for two weeks. He will also have his pay docked during the suspension.

It means Messi will miss the Ligue 1 games against Troyes and Ajaccio but could possibly return for the encounter with Auxerre on May 21.

"I am sorry for what I did and I wait to see what the club decides," said Messi in a video posted on his Instagram account. "Honestly, I thought we were going to have a day off after the game like we did in previous weeks."

"I had organized this trip to Saudi Arabia which I had cancelled once already; I could not cancel it again," he added. "I repeat: I want to say sorry for what I did. I'm waiting to hear what the club want to do with me."

When asked about the incident in a press briefing earlier on Friday, PSG head coach Christophe Galtier confirmed that he was not the one who meted out the harsh punishment, but he declined to say if he endorsed it.

"I was informed by the board at the start of the week of the decision to suspend Messi," he said. "The decision was nothing to do with me. I was informed of the decision. Leo's suspension has added to poor performances, we can't hide behind that...

"I can't say it has been a pleasant period. There's a target to achieve, players are working hard. We are focused and committed...

"We'll see when Leo returns what will happen. Obviously, there will be discussions with the entire club but also with Leo, who is the primary person involved."

The controversy comes as Messi's future is now up in the air. The Daily Telegraph revealed that the Saudi Arabian government is planning a mouth-watering offer that would pay the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner $400 million per season to play for local giants Al Hilal.

Messi is also reportedly considering a return to his former club Barcelona or a lucrative move to Inter Miami in the Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States.

The 35-year-old has made 71 appearances for PSG since joining the club in the summer of 2021, notching 31 goals, 34 assists and winning the Ligue 1 title last season.
