Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus beat world number one Iga Swiatek from Poland 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to win the Madrid Open women's singles final on Saturday.

This was the first time for the second seed to beat Swiatek on clay, proving herself a title contender for the French Open later this month against its defending champion.

Sabalenka made things rather uncomfortable for Swiatek from the outset with her aggressive tactics, breaking her serve in the eighth game before taking the first set. Swiatek raced to a 3-0 lead in the second set to level the match.

Sabalenka opened up a 3-0 lead in the decider, which was quickly leveled again by Swiatek as she made it 3-3. Sabalenka then went on to break Swiatek's serve before winning the title on her fourth match point.

The men's singles final will take place between Spain's Carlos Alcaraz and dark horse Jan-Lennard Struff from Germany on Sunday.
