At least 22 people, including seven children, drowned after a boat capsized off the coastal town of Tanur in the Malappuram district of India's southern state of Kerala, local media reported on Monday.
The accident took place around 7 p.m. near Tuvalthiram beach in the Tanur area of the district. The boat was reportedly carrying over 35 passengers.
Local media NDTV said four people were admitted to a hospital in critical condition, citing Kerala's Sports Minister V Abdurahiman.
Rescue operation is still ongoing for more survivors.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indian President Droupadi Murmu both expressed grief at the accident and sent condolences to bereaved families.
An ex-gratia of 200,000 Indian rupees (around $2,447) from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund would be provided to the next of kin of each deceased, tweeted the prime minister.
The exact cause of the accident is not known yet.
