The Dateng Gorge water conservancy project on the Xijiang River in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region has already generated over 10 billion kWh of electricity since the first three hydropower generating units were put into operation in 2020.

The clean energy the project has produced is estimated to be equivalent to the electricity generated by 3.09 million tons of standard coal, the Guangxi Dateng Gorge Water Conservancy Development Co., Ltd said on Saturday.

The hydropower station includes eight sets of Kaplan axial-flow, paddle-type hydro turbine generators with 1.6 million kilowatt capacity in total.

Of the eight turbine-generator sets, three on the left bank of the river and three of the five units located on the right bank have been put into operation. The remaining two will start operation in 2023.

Located in the city of Guiping, the project is designed for multiple purposes including flood control, navigation and power generation. Once fully operational, it will play an important role in controlling flooding in the Pearl River basin and improving water security in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay area.
