China's southern region has entered the flood season and is expected to see persistent heavy rains in the coming days, announced the disaster control authorities on Sunday.
According to a video meeting held by the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters and the Ministry of Emergency Management, this round of torrential rainfall, which has affected large areas over the past few days, has triggered severe floods and disasters in some areas.
The meeting warned that with the lasting heavy rain, the water level of rivers is expected to keep rising, posing challenges to flood control work.
Authorities called on all affected and nearby regions to enter emergency response mode and make early arrangements to fully guard against flood risks.
The latest forecast by the National Meteorological Center said that the southern part of China will continue to see high precipitation in the next three days.
Some areas in southwestern Guangdong and Hainan Island will experience heavy and torrential rains on Monday and Tuesday. The north-central regions of Guangxi and the north parts of Guangdong will see downpours from Wednesday to Thursday, according to the center.
It also said another round of rainfall will hit southern China from May 16, warning that precautions should be taken to prevent urban water logging, mountain floods and other geological disasters that may be triggered by heavy and sustained rainfall.
