China wary of U.S., Japan, South Korea's provocation of bloc confrontation

The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Tuesday said that U.S., Japan and South Korea are using the Korean Peninsula issue as a pretext to strengthen military cooperation, which will only intensify block confrontation.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin made the remarks at a regular press conference when asked to comment on reports that U.S., Japan and South Korea are planning to link their radars to share real-time information on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's (DPRK) ballistic missiles.

"First of all, I would like to say that the essence of the Korean Peninsula issue is a political and security issue, the root cause of which lies in the remnants of the Cold War and the absence of a peace mechanism," Wang responded.

He pointed out that such military cooperation will not help resolve the remnants of the Cold War and promote the peace mechanism process on the peninsula, but will only increase the risk of block confrontation, undermine the already fragile mutual trust between related parties and damage the strategic security interests of other countries.

If the situation on the peninsula slides into a vicious circle of tension and confrontation and an arms race, then the parties concerned will hardly absolve themselves from blame, he added.

When asked if the three countries' linked radar system plan violated the "three noes" commitment made by South Korea's Moon Jae-in administration, Wang reiterated that the two sides should properly handle the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) issue to make sure that it will not become a stumbling block affecting the bilateral relations.

The "three noes" policy pledged that there will be no additional deployment of THAAD batteries, no South Korean integration into a U.S. led regional missile defense system, and no trilateral alliance with the U.S. and Japan.

Wang hoped that the South Korean side will continue to properly manage and handle this issue in accordance with the consensus of both sides, so as to avoid unnecessary interference and impact on bilateral relations.
