Syrian President Bashar al-Assad received an invitation to next week's Arab summit in Saudi Arabia, the presidency said Wednesday.
Assad received an invitation from Saudi King Salman "to participate in the thirty-second Arab League summit, which will be held in Jeddah on May 19," the Syrian presidency said in a statement.
The move comes a day after Syrian Foreign Ministry announced the resumption of its diplomatic mission in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.
The decision to reopen the diplomatic mission emanates from the deep ties between both countries, their people's aspirations, and the importance of enhancing bilateral relations between Arab countries to serve the joint Arab work, the Syrian ministry said in a statement before Tuesday midnight.
Earlier on Tuesday, Saudi Arabia announced the reopening of its diplomatic mission in Syria, indicating that both countries have normalized relations.
On Sunday, Arab foreign ministers decided during a meeting in Cairo to readmit Syria to the Arab League after 12 years of suspension.
On April 12, the Syrian Foreign Ministry announced that Syria and Saudi Arabia had agreed to resume consular services and air flights between the two countries after the minister visited Riyadh for the first time since 2011, a prelude to restoring full diplomatic representation on Tuesday.
