Song Tao, head of the Taiwan Work Office of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, on Thursday met with Sean Lien, vice chairman of the Kuomintang (KMT).

Lien, entrusted by his father, former Kuomintang (KMT) chairman Lien Chan, has begun a four-day trip to the Chinese mainland city of Xian to visit his great-grandmother's grave.

In talks with Lien, Song said that the settlement of the Taiwan question is a matter of the Chinese people and should be decided by the Chinese people, so the 1992 Consensus must be adhered to and "Taiwan independence" and external interference must be opposed.

"We need to promote peaceful development of cross-Straits relations, advance the great cause of national reunification, and work for the well-being of compatriots on both sides of the Straits and the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation," Song said.

Lien agreed to adhere to the 1992 Consensus and oppose "Taiwan independence." He also stressed that the two sides across the Taiwan Straits should strengthen exchanges and cooperation so that people on both sides of the Straits can benefit from it.
