U.S. to limit asylum at Mexico border; Illegal crossings continue
01:19

Migrants, desperate to reach the U.S. ahead of the start of a new crackdown, swam across the Rio Grande in Mexico toward Brownsville, Texas. Crossings started early in the day, with families and adults forming groups and crossing together along river points that had easier riverbank access. In an attempt to stop them, National Guard troops used bulldozers, metal posts, machetes and draped the riverbank border with concertina wire, prioritizing the areas across the points where crowds were congregating on the Mexican side.

The strategy stalled a number of crossings. U.S. officials began denying asylum to migrants who showed up at the Mexico border without first seeking protection in a country they passed through. It's part of the U.S. administration's effort to crack down on illegal border crossings. It allowed the government to quickly expel migrants to Mexico.
