A groundbreaking ceremony was held for the first station on the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) mega-project in Malaysia on May 12. This major infrastructure project is being undertaken by a Chinese company within the framework of China's Belt and Road Initiative.

The Belt and Road Initiative which was proposed by China in 2013, aims to improve policy coordination, connectivity of facilities, unimpeded trade, financial integration, and strengthen people-to-people exchanges on a trans-continental scale.
