Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in the Italian capital Rome on Saturday for a visit.
Zelenskyy landed at Rome's Ciampino Airport and was welcomed by Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, according to Italian news agency ANSA.
Zelenskyy later tweeted that he would meet with Italian President Sergio Mattarella, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and the pope during the visit, which is his first trip to the country since the beginning of the Ukraine conflict in February last year. He is also expected to be the guest of a popular Italian television talk show before heading to Germany.
Meloni visited Zelenskyy in Kyiv in February to assure him of Italy's continued support for Ukraine, despite some of her allies, most notably former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, having longstanding, close ties with Moscow. The meeting with the pope is expected to be the most significant part of Zelenskyy's time in Italy.
