A Hong Kong liquefied natural gas (LNG) receiving and offtake terminal, the world's largest offshore LNG terminal, has entered trial operation, said the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) on Sunday.
The two-berth offshore terminal, plus a land-based LNG terminal and two submarine pipelines, belongs to the Hong Kong LNG project. CNOOC said that it is the largest offshore energy infrastructure construction project in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in recent years.
Once completed, the project will increase the share of clean energy in the region's electricity production, which is of great significance for optimizing the energy structure of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, it added.

The terminal is capable of berthing two of the world's largest floating storage and regasification units or LNG carriers simultaneously.
The designed service life of the terminal is 50 years, which is more than twice as long as the conventional offshore LNG ones, and can withstand the impact force of 4.9 million ships berthing annually with a maximum of 2,400 tonnes each time, said Liu Zhigang, deputy general manager at CNOOC Hong Kong LNG Project.
CNOOC has formed a whole industrial chain from liquefaction to gasification, from land to offshore LNG project construction capacity, according to Wang Zhangling, chairman of CNOOC Offshore Oil Engineering Co., LTD., the project's developer.
Wang added that the company is at the forefront of the world in engineering fields, such as large-scale LNG modules, super large LNG storage tanks and receiving terminals.
