Marcelo Bielsa, former manager of the Premier League's Leeds United, has been appointed as the new boss of the Uruguayan men's national football team, the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) announced on Monday.

Bielsa hasn't managed any team since he parted ways with Leeds in February 2022. Uruguay will be the third South American team he manages. He managed Argentina between 1998 and 2004 and Chile between 2007 and 2011.

Though Bielsa hasn't won many championships in his career as a manager, his team always plays in a way that pleases the eye with their fast, open offense. He led Argentina to win the gold medal in the Olympic Games in 2004 and to finish as the runners-up in the Copa America the same year. Bielsa helped Chile qualify for the FIFA World Cup in 2010 after the team missed two straight editions of the tournament previously.

Bielsa has managed multiple clubs. Athletic Bilbao finished the 2011-12 season as the runners-up in both Copa del Rey and the UEFA Europa League. He led Leeds back to the Premier League after winning the title in the English Football League Championship during the 2019-20 campaign.

Uruguay accepted resignation from Diego Alonso after they were knocked out during the group stage in the World Cup in Qatar last year. Their first 2026 World Cup qualifying game will be against Chile at home in September. The tournament will expand to 48 teams for the first time in 2026 in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. South American teams will battle for six automatic berths and one more via a playoff.
