Infrared camera footage showed a variety of rare and endangered animals in Pingxiang City of east China's Jiangxi Province, including yellow-bellied tragopans and white-necked long-tailed pheasants.
The Jiangxi Academy of Forestry recently conducted a survey in Lianhua County to investigate the terrestrial vertebrate wild animals in the region.
After collecting data captured by the infrared cameras, the academy found the rare yellow-bellied tragopan and white-necked long-tailed pheasant, both of which are under first-class state protection.
Also spotted were second-class protected species such as the woodcock and spotted linsang and third-class protected animals including the Chinese muntjac, Chinese ferret-badger, crab-eating mongoose and greater hog badger.
"This is the first time that the yellow-bellied tragopan and white-necked long-tailed pheasant have been spotted in Lianhua County, which increased the number of the geographical distribution of the two animals that are under first-class state protection. A number of the animals were filmed, which will provide valuable information for the study of their survival and reproduction. It proved that there are many rare animals under protection in Lianhua, showing that the protection of ecology and biodiversity has produced good results," said Wang Bingqing, a staff member with the forestry bureau of Lianhua County.
