Zibo, an industrial city in east China's Shandong Province, has unexpectedly become an instant hit and arguably one of the most popular tourist destinations in China this year. This is due to its barbecue, which became an internet sensation in early March. But what's the city doing now since the travel season in May ended? Can it maintain its newfound popularity? Huang Yichang finds out.

Like most Zibo residents, barbecue store owner Liu Jing never expected the city to become instantly famous one day.

Although busier than before, she is considering whether to open a new store or not.

Locals come out every day for a stroll as usual but still appear confused by the crowds.

Zibo, a third-tier, low-profile industrial city in Shandong, has experienced a revival since March.

And the popularity shows no signs of declining.

HUANG YICHANG Zibo, Shandong "This is one of the night markets in Zibo, although we can't see really long queues, but have a look of the barbecue stores around me. They are still quite busy."

Most tourists here now are trying to avoid peak times, but it's inevitable to encounter queues.

"A stove and pancake paired with skewers, scallions and dipping sauce. This is a very typical Zibo barbecue. Hmm, it's worth coming all the way to try it."

Many Chinese cities have unique styles of barbecuing. So, now there are criticisms over whether or not Zibo can keep up its sudden fame. And turning from an industrial town to a true tourist hub can be challenging

Walking down the street, it's easy to see how the local government is riding the wave by seizing every opportunity imaginable.

21 special tourist bus routes have been operating across the city.

A parking lot was constructed in three days.

City management officers and volunteers can be seen throughout the place.

These are part of a series of regulations implemented to enhance the tourist experience.

Despite the local authority's commendable efforts, they politely declined an interview with us.

So these scenes did not come as a surprise.

I can fully understand their concern that the city doesn't want the sudden fame to go to the extremes which can potentially damage the image they have worked hard to maintain.

Despite the provincial administration's attempts to cool down the hype, the local residents are still indulging in the frenzy.

However, most residents seem to haven't benefited from the barbecue boom at all.

So that's why the locals still try their best to offer the most enthusiasm to their visitors.

Many say that perhaps what attracts everyone here is not just the barbecue itself, but the integrity and the warmth that defines a city.

As many believe long-term success needs a smooth governance and harmonious society.

Despite the high hopes of many, it is unclear how long the city can continue its status.

But what is known is that many barbecue places are still recruiting staff and various policies are being rolled out to encourage talents to stay.

Locals are also still showing their utmost enthusiasm. And Liu Jing has finally made up her mind to establish a new barbecue store. Huang Yichang, CGTN, Zibo, Shandong Province.
