A magnitude-7.7 earthquake hit southeast of the Loyalty Islands on Friday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the tsunami threat had largely passed on Friday afternoon. Earlier it had warned about the possibility of waves ranging up to 1 meter above the tide level across 26 locations in the South Pacific.

There have been no reports of any casualties or damage yet.
