The 32nd Arab League summit kicked off in the Saudi city of Jeddah on Friday to discuss regional and global issues that are crucial to the region's stability.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad attended the summit for the first time since his country was suspended from the Arab League after the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011.
The readmission of Syria to the pan-Arab body, the ongoing conflict in Sudan and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict will top the agenda of the summit.
Speaking at the opening session on Friday, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman welcomed Assad back to the Arab League. "We are pleased today by the attendance of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in this summit," he said in a speech, adding he hoped the return would lead to "stability" in Syria.
Assad called the summit a "historic opportunity" to address crises across the region without foreign interference and expressed hopes for a "new phase" in Arab coordination.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also attended the meeting in Jeddah and delivered a speech as a guest.
