At least 145 people were killed in Myanmar due to cyclonic storm Mocha, according to AFP, citing Myanmar's State Administration Council on Friday.
"Altogether 145 local people were killed during the cyclone," a statement from Myanmar's authorities said. The number included four soldiers, 24 locals and 117 of the minority Rohingya.
Mocha made landfall near Sittwe in western Myanmar's Rakhine state on Sunday, with winds of up to 130 mph (about 209 kph), and raged across the country.
The UN said at least 800,000 people in Myanmar need emergency food aid and other assistance after Mocha slammed into the country.
"The cyclone left a trail of devastation across Myanmar's Rakhine state, with houses flattened, roads cut off by uprooted trees, hospitals and schools destroyed, and telecommunications and power lines severely disrupted," Anthea Webb, the UN World Food Programme's deputy regional director for Asia and the Pacific, told reporters in Geneva. "There are at least 800,000 people in urgent need of emergency food assistance."
