Xavi Hernandez, manager of Barcelona, doesn't think it's appropriate to describe their long-time foes Real Madrid's 4-0 loss to Manchester City in the second-leg game of the UEFA Champions League semifinals as a "thrashing."

"I don't like the word 'baño' [thrashing] in football," Xavi said in a press conference on Friday. "Words like that and 'failure' are not constructive. Look, City were massively superior in the game this week and they took advantage of that. That was not the case at the Bernabeu [in the first leg], but they were worthy winners overall. They are the best team in the world."

Real, who have won five Champions League titles in the past decade, held Man City 1-1 in fairly close first-leg game of the semifinals at home last week, but suffered a spectacular 4-0 loss in the second leg at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.

Though the 2022-23 season is not over, the top two La Liga teams will both finish it with a domestic trophy each. Real clinched the Copa del Rey title after beating Osasuna 2-1 in the tournament's final on May 6. Barca, on the other hand, have regained the La Liga title and will lay their hands on the trophy after Saturday's game against Real Sociedad at Camp Nou.

"The bus parade through the city was extraordinary this week – I have lost my voice with all the celebrating," Xavi said. "The fans needed to celebrate these big titles. But there is a game to be played, too, and we now want to finish the LaLiga campaign strongly."

Having helped Barca win the La Liga tile for the first time since 2019, Xavi is likely to sign a contract extension. His current deal is due for renewal in 2024.

"There are talks and there won't be any problems, but it's not a priority right now," Xavi added. "I have one more year on my deal. I will never be a problem for Barça, that's for sure, even if I have read reports that there are supposedly discrepancies. I would stay here for the rest of my life, but it comes down to results and performances."
