Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of Russia's Wagner mercenary group, on Saturday claimed full control of the city of Bakhmut in the Donetsk region, RIA news agency reported.

He said that his forces would withdraw from Bakhmut from May 25 for rest and retraining, handing over control to the regular Russian army.

However, Ukraine's military later denied Wagner's claim and said its troops were continuing to fight there.

"This is not true. Our units are fighting in Bakhmut," Serhiy Cherevatyi, spokesperson for the "east" group of Ukrainian forces, told Reuters.
