May 21 marks International Tea Day, as designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 2019 in a bid to "promote and foster collective actions to implement activities in favor of the sustainable production and consumption of tea and raise awareness of its importance in fighting hunger and poverty."

According to the United Nations, tea is the 2nd most consumed drink in the world after water and has seen its production and processing contribute to the reduction of extreme poverty, the fight against hunger, the empowerment of women and the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems. Meanwhile, raising public awareness of the importance of tea for rural development and sustainable livelihoods and improving the tea value chain is in line with the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Boasting a rich and profound tea culture, China is one of the dominant global "tea players," and ranks as the largest tea producer and a leading exporter in the world. Therefore, it is not surprising why various activities have been held across the country to honor the day for Chinese people's beloved beverage.
