A major fire broke out in a school dormitory in central Guyana, the South American nation's President Irfaan Ali said Sunday night.

"This is a major disaster. It is horrible, it is painful," Ali said, without giving the number of dead or injured. A security source told AFP on condition of anonymity that there were "many dead and injured."
