Across the Lhasa River and opposite the Potala Palace, sits the village of Cijuelin, which has experienced much revitalization in the past decade thanks to cultural tourism.

The old village core area has been turned into a Cijuelin Tibetan-style street and is located just two kilometers away from downtown Lhasa, Xizang Autonomous Region. It was included on the list of national-level tourist areas in 2022.

Since it opened to the public in 2015, the Cijuelin Tibetan-style street area has provided thousands of jobs to locals, while promoting local Tibetan music, performing arts and craftsmanship.

The epic opera “Princess Wencheng” is a must-see local performance, which integrates Tibetan drama, music and dance with modern choreography, telling a romantic story of the Han princess Wenchen’s marriage with Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo over 1,300 years ago.

Over the years, the outdoor opera has been continuously improved. Since its premiere in 2013, the large-scale opera production has been performed more than 1,600 times, for over 4 million viewers.

The flourishing performance has not only contributed a lot to local performers’ income and the art scene, but also brought new business opportunities to the services sector.

Rows of traditional Tibetan-style homestays, exquisite handcraft shops, as well as cafés and restaurants have attracted thousands of tourists to visit.
