Chinese President Xi Jinping presented the national honorary title of "outstanding contributor to cultural relics protection" to Fan Jinshi at a ceremony in Beijing on September 29, 2019.

Fan Jinshi, popularly known as the "daughter of Dunhuang," has worked at the Dunhuang Academy since graduating from Peking University in 1963, contributing to the inheritance and protection of Dunhuang culture for nearly 60 years.

As for civilization, Xi has always stressed the importance of diversity to human civilization and its role as the inexhaustible driving force for human progress.

In 2020, the Qiushi Journal published an article by President Xi in which he referenced Dunhuang.

"With a broad mind of openness and inclusiveness, the Chinese civilization has constantly drawn on the achievements of other civilizations and created its unique Dunhuang culture and the Silk Road spirit," Xi said.

As a scholar, Fan said she has been encouraged by President Xi's words. The spirit of Xi's speech points the direction for archaeological workers, she added.
