China's pavilion was unveiled earlier this week at the ongoing 2023 International Architecture Biennale (IAE) in Venice, Italy. As a highly anticipated showcase of modern Chinese architecture and design, the pavilion stands out with an exhibition exploring the relationship between tradition and contemporary life titled "Renewal: A Symbiotic Narrative."

Over 50 colossal scrolls form a mesmerizing corridor, evoking a sense of wandering past buildings. As visitors are transported into a world of architectural marvels, they experience the structural evolution of China over the past 40 years.

Ruan Xing, curator of China's pavilion, pointed out that renewal, in the context of Chinese culture, come from a mindset. "Changes become the norm, but are always accompanied by the steadfastness of our traditions. For the Chinese, the pursuit of permanence in living environments is not the goal. Instead, renewal is ingrained in our mindset," said Ruan.

The exhibition explores the interplay between contemporary and traditional practices, reflecting the symbiotic relationship between technology and human interaction in modern China.

"Renewal and symbiosis are not only contemporary perspectives but concepts deeply rooted in Chinese architecture and planning," said Zhuang Ziyu, an artist who participated in the exhibition. "We find them in our traditional arts, gardens, and city planning. They are also reflected in the interfaces of our advanced technology and communication tools." Zhuang added.

The pavilion has held a prominent presence at the Venice Architecture Biennale since 2005, offering a glimpse into the dynamism of China's architectural landscape.

As one of the most significant global art events of its kind, the 2023 International Architecture Biennale runs until November 26.
