China's new Ambassador to the United States Xie Feng on Thursday met with U.S. Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland in Washington D.C., U.S.

The Chinese ambassador said he's looking forward to "working with American colleagues in the days ahead."

Noting that China-U.S. relations concern the welfare of the two peoples and the future of the world, he urged the U.S. to move in the same direction with China, implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state, and explore the right way for China and the U.S. to get along in the new era.

Upholding the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation, the two sides should strengthen dialogue, manage differences and promote cooperation, and strive to put China-U.S. relations back on the right track, he added.

Nuland welcomed Xie, saying on her Twitter that "open dialogue" is essential for developing a relationship with China.

The two sides also exchanged views on issues of common concern and agreed to maintain close communication.

On the same day, Xie also presented the copy of his Letter of Credence to Chief of Protocol for the United States Rufus Gifford.
