China's three-pronged prevention system to control birth defects in the country has achieved remarkable results, according to official statistics.
The latest numbers from the National Health Commission (NHC) showed that infant mortality rate caused by birth defects has deceased by more than half to 0.11 percent in 2021 from 0.23 percent in 2011.
The rate of under-five mortality related to birth defects dropped from 0.27 percent to 0.12 percent over the same period.
The three-pronged system comprises improved health education and checkups before pregnancy, all-round health services during pregnancy and targeted physical examinations of infants after birth.
