Highlights of Chinese special envoy's European trip over Ukraine crisis

With Moscow as the last stop, China's special envoy Li Hui appears to have wrapped up his six-leg tour to Europe that included Ukraine, Poland, France, Germany and Brussels, the headquarters of the European Union.

During the nearly two-week trip, which started on May 15, Li, the special representative of the Chinese government on Eurasian affairs, met with leaders or top diplomats, exchanging views on the political settlement of the Ukraine crisis.

The much-anticipated trip came weeks after a phone call between the heads of state of China and Ukraine, in which the Chinese leader renewed Beijing's commitment to standing on the side of peace over the Ukraine crisis.

Here is a highlighted wrap-up of the Chinese special envoy's trip.

First stop: Ukraine

Date: May 16-17, 2023

Who did the Chinese envoy meet? Li Hui met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and held separate talks with Head of the Ukrainian President's Office Andriy Yermak, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and officials of the Ukrainian ministries of infrastructure, energy and defense.

What did the Chinese envoy say? There is no panacea to resolve the crisis. The parties involved need to proceed from themselves, accumulate mutual trust and create conditions for ending the conflict and promoting peace talks.

What did the Ukrainian side say? Ukraine voiced its pleasure at receiving China's special envoy shortly after the phone talks between the leaders. It said it attaches great significance to China's important role in international affairs as a permanent member of the UN Security Council and welcomes China's positive role in ending the conflict and restoring peace.

Second stop: Poland

Date: May 19, 2023

Who did the Chinese envoy meet? Li Hui held talks with Wojciech Gerwel, undersecretary of the state of Poland, in Warsaw.

What did the Chinese envoy say? China values Poland's important role in regional affairs, and China stands ready to maintain communication with Poland on the political settlement of the Ukraine crisis and supports the establishment of a balanced, effective and sustainable European security architecture to provide an enduring guarantee for peace in Europe.

What did the Polish side say? Poland hopes China will continue its positive role in the Ukraine issue to ease and cool down the current tensions and secure peace as soon as possible.

Third stop: France

Date: May 23, 2023

Who did the Chinese envoy meet? Li Hui held talks with Frederic Mondoloni, director general of political and security affairs of the French Foreign Ministry, in Paris.

What did the Chinese envoy say? China and France have many common understandings on the Ukraine issue.

What did the French side say? France highly values Special Representative Li Hui's visit and looks forward to China continuing its constructive role in ceasing hostilities.

Fourth stop: Germany

Date: May 24, 2023

Who did the Chinese envoy meet? Li Hui held talks with German Federal Foreign Office State Secretary Andreas Michaelis in Berlin.

What did the Chinese envoy say? China supports European countries' efforts to address the root causes of the crisis and find a solution to both the symptoms and the root causes for the lasting peace and security of the European continent.

What did the German side say? Germany highly values China's positive efforts to de-escalate the Ukraine crisis. It is very useful and necessary for Germany and China to strengthen dialogue on a series of major international and regional issues, including the Ukraine issue.

Fifth stop: Brussels

Date: May 25, 2023

Who did the Chinese envoy meet? Li Hui held separate talks with Frederic Bernard, head of Cabinet of President of European Council Charles Michel, and Enrique Mora, deputy secretary-general of the European External Action Service, in Brussels.

What did the Chinese envoy say? China has always maintained an objective and impartial position on the Ukraine issue and actively promotes peace talks. China and the EU share much consensus on the issue. China supports the European countries' strengthening their strategic autonomy and making efforts for the long-term stability of the European continent.

What did the EU side say? EU officials spoke highly of the positive role China played in the peaceful settlement of the conflict and said they appreciate the principles in the document outlining China's position on the political settlement of the Ukraine crisis. The EU shares a lot of common interests regarding the Ukraine issue with China.

Sixth stop: Russia

Date: May 26, 2023

Who did the Chinese envoy meet? Li Hui held talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Andrei Rudenko and Mikhail Galuzin, both deputy foreign ministers of Russia, in Moscow.

What did the Chinese envoy say? China always follows the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, upholds an objective and fair stance and actively promotes peace talks. China always makes its own judgment independently based on the merits of the issue. China always stands on the side of peace and dialogue and the right side of history.

What did the Russian side say? Russia appreciates China's sincere desire and practical efforts to promote a peaceful settlement of the Ukraine crisis and believes China's relevant principles and stance are conducive to a peaceful settlement.
