The Boston Celtics defeated the Miami Heat 104-103 in Game 6 of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals at the Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida, on Saturday, tying the series 3-3.
No team has ever come back from a 3-0 deficit in an NBA playoff series. Three teams have tied it 3-3 after losing the first three games, but all lost in the final competition. The Celtics now became the fourth team that has won three elimination games in one series. They will have the chance to challenge the impossible mission in Game 7 at TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts, on May 29.
Derrick White gave the Celtics this chance by making a 0.3-second buzzer-beating putback. They trailed 103-102 before that play when there were three seconds left. White was the one to inbound the ball. The Heat's defender on him, Max Strus, was understandably paying more attention to helping Jimmy Butler keep Jayson Tatum from receiving the ball. They did it, but at the cost of allowing White to sneak up on the hoop after he threw the ball to Marcus Smart.

Smart shot a tough 3-pointer and missed it in front of the hands of Gabe Vincent. At that moment, the Heat's biggest player Bam Adebayo was drawn out of the paint by Jaylen Brown. 1.96-meter-tall Caleb Martin was the team's only player staying next to the rim, but he was watching out for Al Horford in the corner.
That's why neither Tatum nor White faced much of a challenge when they competed for the offensive rebound. Tatum jumped too early to get it, but White had the rebound and released it just in time for the shot to count. It was the sixth offensive rebound grabbed by the Celtics in the fourth quarter. Five of them happened in the final four minutes and three of them in the final 61 seconds.

White's contributions to the Celtics' win on Saturday night was much more than the game-saving rebound and putback. He did better than any of his teammates in guarding Butler, thanks to his strong lower body and well-made choice of timing for leaping to deflect. That's why not only did White manage to hold himself back from being tricked by Butler's pump fake moves, he also gave Butler a block face-to-face.
Butler struggled to shoot 2-for-15 from the field in the first three quarters. Neither did Adebayo do well on the offensive end. Martin, Vincent, Strus and Duncan Robinson supported kept the game alive by draining 12 triples until Butler bounced back in the final period. He got 15 points in this quarter alone after making eight free throws. He kept attacking the Celtics' big men, Robert Williams III and Horford, in the final five minutes as an effective way to score.

The Celtics' star duo, Tatum and Brown, combined to get 57 points and 21 rebounds in Saturday's game. The two missed all 12 of their 3-pointers, but made 23 free throws collectively. Brown even grabbed five offensive rebounds, a new career high in the playoffs.
The Celtics shot 3,492 triples, which made nearly half of their total 7,278 field goal (FG) attempts, in the regular season. It's both rare and integral for them to win a game while missing 28 of their 35 shots from downtown, like they did on Saturday. They are now the favorable side of the series after winning the past three games in a row.
