Forum in Beijing shares carbon peak, neutrality solutions vision

The second Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutrality Forum was held in Beijing on Saturday as part of the ongoing 2023 Zhongguancun Forum, gathering 12 leading academics and experts worldwide to share insightful visions on innovation in key energy technologies in pursuing low-carbon green growth.

The forum featured in-depth discussions on energy development strategy, advanced nuclear energy, new power systems, renewable energy and energy storage, highlighting the interdisciplinary exchange of ideas and expertise among scientific institutions, universities, industry enterprises and other innovative actors to synergize innovation and industrial chains and accelerate the industrialization of green and low-carbon technologies.

The forum engaged in exhaustive discussions in aligning and synergizing global efforts to combat climate change, affirming China's unremitting commitment to carbon neutrality and efforts in pursuing green, low-carbon energy innovation.

Zhan Wenlong, an academic at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, underlined the importance of nuclear energy in achieving carbon neutrality by 2060.

"When we achieve carbon neutrality before 2060, nuclear energy will mainly provide energy for the basic nuclear power in the power grid," said Zhan. "Now, the basic nuclear energy is mainly coal, but it will be replaced by nuclear when coal emits too much carbon dioxide. Nuclear power has become relatively mature and economically viable."

Zhu Qingshan, Party Secretary at the Institute of Process Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, explored the development path of ultra-low carbon in the steel industry, which is the largest carbon emitter in the industrial process after energy.

"The development of ultra-low carbon in the steel industry is of great significance for China to achieve carbon neutrality," said Zhu.

China's low-carbon technology achievements are mushrooming, with a batch of landmark, leading and green low-carbon technological innovations taking shape.
