Director's take: unforgettable experience behind the scenes of The Stage
CGTN

After more than two months of preparation, 10 work messaging groups, six guest musicians, nearly 100 students from China and the U.S., and many boxed meals and soft drinks, I am so thrilled to see CGTN The Stage going through its final edits.

I was part of a hardworking directing team for this international music show. The program set off to explore how traveling through different cultures shapes the way artists make music. We believe music is never a one-way street. Each culture has its own style, and in this day and age, they interact and influence one another.

On the day of filming, I was touched to see our humble idea unfolding in front of my eyes. Most of our guest musicians had not met before, nor had they collaborated with the students; but music became their mutual language. Despite their different backgrounds, they were connected by something deeper.

As the taping drew to a close, I saw musicians and students exchanging phone numbers, making plans to meet and jam again. One guest had to rush off to catch a flight and was sad to miss "the best part where we get to chitchat after filming." One studio audience member told me that he "wanted to start learning an instrument from now on."

Being a part of The Stage was definitely an unforgettable experience. It not only allowed me to practice my coordination skills, but also enabled me to get a better understanding of how to be a bridge, to facilitate and promote understanding of different sides. I now hold these moments close to my heart.

The first part of The Stage will air on May 31, 2023.
