Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich announced Tuesday that club's legend Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has been appointed as a member of the supervisory board by the general assembly.

"We're happy to have brought in Karl-Heinz Rummenigge as a member of our supervisory board. He's one of the greatest figures in the history of our club, everyone knows what he's done. His experience, his expertise and his international network will help us enormously to ensure FC Bayern continues to be successful in the future," Bayern's CEO Herbert Hainer said.

Though the Bavarian powerhouse won the Bundesliga title – their record 11th in a row – they could hardly call the 2022-23 campaign a successful season. They suffered quarterfinal exits from both the UEFA Champions League and DFB-Pokal in April, and almost lost their Bundesliga crown before a dramatic final day saw them pip Borussia Dortmund to the title on goal difference.

The club's struggles were exacerbated after Thomas Tuchel replaced Julian Nagelsmann as their manager. Nagelsmann was sacked in late March, with the club one point behind Dortmund in the league standings at the time, and despite the young manager having masterminded a 3-0 aggregate win over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last 16. That decision was made by CEO Oliver Kahn and sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic, both of whom were sacked last week.

Rummenigge worked as the vice president of Bayern between 1991 and 2002. He was subsequently appointed chairman of the executive board and CEO until July 2021, when Kahn took over the position.

"I thank the supervisory board for their trust and I'm pleased to assist FC Bayern on this board going forward. I had the great fortune and honor to celebrate many successes with this club, so I gladly agreed to the supervisory board's request," Rummenigge said.

Bayern further announced that supervisory board vice-chairman Jan-Christian Dreesen is taking over as the new CEO of Bayern. As for the sporting director vacancy, German sports magazine Kicker reported that the club may wait until Christmas to take a call.
