U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has accused China of rejecting a U.S. invitation for dialogue between the U.S. and China's defense ministers. In an interview with CGTN anchor Xu Qinduo, Chen Dongxiao, president of the Shanghai Institute for International Studies, responds that China has been willing to engage with the U.S., but many of the U.S. administration's past promises have not been fulfilled. The toxic political atmosphere in Washington begs the question of whether such talks can actually produce substantive results.
