The Colosseum, also called the Flavian Amphitheater, is a giant amphitheater built in Rome during the rule of the Flavian emperors (69-96 AD). It is located just east of Palatine Hill and could seat some 50,000 spectators in ancient times. The Colosseum was the venue for thousands of hand-to-hand combats between gladiators, contests between men and animals, and for many larger combats including mock naval engagements.
