Chinese basketball great Yao Ming is on the list of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Hall of Fame Class of 2023, the sport's international governing body announced on Friday.

Yao, 42, has served as the president of the Chinese Basketball Association since 2017 and is now in his second term after being reelected last year.

As an athlete, he led the Chinese men's team to a top-eight finish at the Beijing Summer Olympics in 2008, and won three gold medals at the FIBA Asia Cup.

He became the first international player to be picked number one overall in the 2002 NBA draft and played for the Houston Rockets till retirement in 2011, during which time he was selected eight times as an NBA All-Star. He was inducted in the NBA Hall of Fame in 2016, and his No. 11 jersey was retired by the Rockets a year later.

Brazil's Wlamir Marques, world champion in 1959 and 1963, Australia's Penny Taylor, former Women's Basketball World Cup champion and other world famous players and coaches will be honored ahead of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 in Manila, Philippines. Ten players and two coaches have been formally recognized for their contributions to basketball, the FIBA confirmed.
